Instructor training / Iron Convent

How to prepare for a pole dance instructor course

You enjoy training and are starting to think about teaching. Preparing for an instructor course means looking at familiar moves differently: not only “Can I do this?” but also “How would I explain it to someone else?”

Match your experience to the syllabus

Read the syllabus and ask about entry requirements. The number of months you have trained does not describe your readiness for a particular course on its own. Your class experience, foundations and movement background matter too.

If you are unsure about timing, tell the tutors about your training and why you want to attend. An honest discussion helps identify the appropriate next step.

Review familiar foundations

Revisit elements you already know. Note their names, common difficulties and questions about introducing them in class. The aim is to reflect on your learning, rather than write instructions for unfamiliar tricks.

Ask your regular instructor what would be useful to review. A clear set of questions is more valuable than trying to learn as many new tricks as possible just before the course.

Observe how a class is taught

In your regular classes, observe the order of tasks, the explanations and how the teacher responds to different learning speeds. Notice which cues help you understand movement.

Write a short explanation of a familiar exercise to discuss with the course tutors. Performing a movement and communicating it clearly are skills that develop alongside each other.

Prepare your schedule and materials

Check session times, travel and breaks. Bring notes, water, familiar training clothes and any materials requested by the organiser. Confirm recording arrangements rather than assuming everyone can be filmed.

Leave time afterwards to organise your notes. Useful course material is something you can return to and connect with your own questions.
